General objective:

To provide the students with the foundations of the medical mycology that enable them to recognize the types of the common pathogenic fungi and methods of their identifications.

By the end of this course the student should be abl

      Discuss classification, structure, and the reproduction of fungi

2.      Describe and apply the methods of safety within the mycology laboratory.

      Discuss the general methods of transmission and pathogenicity of fungi.

     Collect, preserve and transport fungal diseases specimens.

      Discuss the components and types of fungal media.

      Prepare the basic media for the cultivation of fungi.

      Cultivate fungi by the common culture methods.

      Discuss the basic stains used in medical mycology and prepare it.

      Discuss the  common diagnostic methods of fungal diseases.

 Discuss the general characteristics, pathogenicity, and the identification methods of the following common fungal pathogens:

 dermatophytes

 subcutaneous fungi.

 systemic  fungi.

 opportunistic fungi.

  Discuss the types of anti-fungal, their mechanism of action and methods of fungal resistance to them.
